Sump Pump Installation in Brampton
A sump pump has to work at the exact moment everything else goes wrong: a heavy storm, a fast snow melt, sometimes a power cut. When it stops, the water it was holding back comes up through the floor. It's the part of basement leak repair in Brampton that most homeowners only think about after it fails.

What does a sump pump installation include? A pit is dug into the basement floor at a low point, lined, and connected to the drainage pipe around the footing. A pump sits in the pit and switches on when the water rises, pushing it through a discharge pipe with a check valve to the outside, well away from the foundation.
Below: when you need one, what goes in, where the water should go, how to tell a pump is failing, why a backup matters, and what it costs.
Do you need a sump pump?
You likely do if:
- You're adding an interior drain. Every interior waterproofing system ends at a sump pit.
- You have a pit with no pump, or a pump nobody has tested in years.
- The pit fills during every storm and the pump struggles to keep up.
- The basement has flooded with clear groundwater before.
Dirty water coming up the floor drain during a storm is a different problem. That's the sewer backing up, and the fix is a backwater valve, not a sump pump.
What goes into a sump pump installation?
- Pick the spot. The pit goes where the drainage can reach it, usually at a low corner near an outside wall.
- Cut the floor and dig the pit. A section of slab is cut out, the pit is dug, and a liner goes in.
- Connect the drainage. The drain at the footing is connected into the pit so groundwater flows to it.
- Set the pump. The pump sits in the pit with a float switch that turns it on as the water rises.
- Run the discharge line. A pipe carries the water outside, with a check valve so it can't run back down into the pit.
- Close up and test. The floor is patched around the liner, a lid goes on, and we fill the pit to watch a full cycle.
Replacing an old pump in an existing pit skips most of that. It's mostly steps 4 to 6.
Where should the water go?
Outside, and well away from the house. A discharge pipe that empties right next to the foundation sends the water back into the same soil the pump just drained, so you pay to pump it twice.
In winter, a discharge line that holds water can freeze solid. It should slope so it empties between cycles.
Our setup: the discharge line slopes so it empties between cycles, and it ends on a splash pad at least 10 feet from the house. A freeze-guard fitting at the wall lets the water spill out if the outside line freezes, so the pump never pushes against ice.
How do you know a sump pump is failing?
- It runs nonstop, even in dry weather.
- It hums, but no water moves.
- It switches on and off every few seconds.
- The pit is full of silt, gravel or rust.
- Nobody knows how old it is.
The bucket test: pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit. The float should rise, the pump should start, and the water should drop and the pump shut off within seconds. Do it before storm season, not during it.
Do you need a battery backup?
Storms are when the power is most likely to go out, and storms are when the pump has to run. A battery backup is a second pump in the same pit. It takes over when the main pump fails or loses power.
A high-water alarm is a cheap add-on worth having. It warns you before the water reaches the floor.
We install battery backup pumps, from $600, plus HST. We don't supply high-water alarms.
What does sump pump installation cost?
HomeStars' Canadian price guide puts replacing a sump pump at $300 to $1,200, unit and installation included. A new installation costs more because the pit has to be dug. HomeStars lists $500 to $1,000 for the pit alone, before plumbing, electrical and labour. A battery backup adds about $200 to $600.
Our price, plus HST: pump replacement from $450, a new pit and pump from $1,500, and a battery backup from $600. Sump pumps that are part of a full system are covered in basement waterproofing cost.
